Carriage painters, automotive engineers, a convicted killer, the “popcorn lady”, and the movers and shakers behind the Auburn Automotive legacy lie side by side in Auburn’s historic Woodlawn Cemetery and the Auburn Mausoleum. Join Auburn native, cemetery expert, and historic preservationist, John Bry, as he returns home to bring back the popular Here Lies Auburn Tour for the first time in three years. Hear the stories of Auburn’s famous, and not so famous, who are now permanent residents of this park style cemetery that dates from 1870.
Join John as he offers you a fascinating glimpse into Auburn’s automotive past, and visit such gravesites as famed auto designer Gordon Beuhrig, and that of Charles Eckhart, whose carriage company would give rise to the Auburn Automobile Company.
Hear of the scandalous murder case of the Sheffer’s that caused a sensation in DeKalb County in 1922, and pay homage to local celebrity Martha Falka, whose fire engine red fingernails and popcorn stand are an Auburn institution. Plus, many more stories that will make you smile, maybe cry, and gain a new respect for those who have gone before us.
John promises a fun and informative tour that will also share the meaning behind the beautiful craftsmanship and symbolism found on the monuments that dot the grounds. The tour will conclude with a peek inside the historic Auburn Mausoleum where the first woman elected to public office in Indiana, and the one time President of the Studebaker Automobile, rest inside.
Take a break from the Festival activities to take a moment to enjoy this peaceful, serene, and shady stroll through Auburn’s dearly departed past at historic Woodlawn Cemetery and Auburn Mausoleum.
